Knowing when to enroll in Medicare is just as important as choosing the right coverage. There are specific times when you can enroll in Medicare, known as enrollment periods. Learn when you can sign up for a Medicare plan here.

Plan Ahead

Timing is everything when it comes to Medicare enrollment. Ensure a smooth transition to Medicare with these steps and timeline.

Step 1: Confirm eligibility and review current coverage

  • 7-9 months before your 65th birthday        

Step 2: Check providers, learn about Medicare and start shopping

  • 4-6 months before your 65th birthday

Step 3: Enroll in Parts A and B and choose other coverage options

  • 3 months before your 65th birthday

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

This is a 7-month period that begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and runs for 3 months after the month you turned 65. This table can help make finding your IEP easy.
