Small Group Medical Policy Termination

Oct. 21, 2026

Applies to Fully Insured Small Groups

Background: Under the Affordable Care Act, when an employer cancels medical coverage for employees, they must provide adequate notice, informing all covered employees that the group medical policy will terminate on a chosen date.

Reminder: This is a reminder to producers about the importance of providing adequate notice and adhering to the Group Administration Document whenever terminating group coverage. We request that producers submit any small group cancellations with a written notice to the Plan at least 30 days prior to the last day of coverage.

Once a request for termination is made for a specified date, any claims for services after the chosen date will be the responsibility of the member or the new carrier.

Should the cancellation request be submitted after the desired termination date, any outstanding claims may impact the final cancellation date.

Notice: If using AutoPay, it is the responsibility of the Delegated Administrator to log in to Blue Access for Employers℠ portal to discontinue AutoPay. This will need to be completed after the last required premium payment has been posted to the account.

Membership note: Terminating the last active member of an account in the employer portal does not terminate the account in its entirety, and the points outlined above must be considered.

If you have any questions about this, please contact your Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois representative.
