No ID Card in the Mail? Here’s What’s Changing for 2027

For years, renewing members may have expected a new ID card to arrive in the mail. Beginning with 2027 renewals, that may change for some members.

Renewing members who selected “Digital ID Card” in their member account, will see their updated digital ID card in their account online or in the BCBSIL App. They will not automatically receive a physical card in the mail. 

Who Will Still Receive a Physical ID Card?

Physical ID cards will continue to be mailed to:  

• New members enrolling for the first time 
• Members who make a doctor or Primary Care Provider, Medical Group or Individual Practice change 
• Members who make a policy change during the year that requires a new ID card
• Members with other benefit or enrollment updates that require a reprint 

Turn the Change into a Client Touchpoint

Some renewing clients may still expect a new ID card in the mail based on their experience in previous years. This is a good opportunity to help them prepare for the change. Remind clients to check their ID card preference and show them how to access their digital ID card through their member account on the BCBSIL app or online.
