Making an Impact
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois Leadership View
For more than 80 years, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) has a storied history of protecting members and helping them be at their best.
As a company, we are focused on making deeper connections with our members and the communities where they live, work and play. Why? Because we're part of these communities, too.
Our employees live where you live. They volunteer at schools, food pantries and other community organizations. You may have worked alongside them and noticed their blue shirts promoting volunteerism and collaboration.
But volunteerism is just a part of who we are. BCBSIL is committed to expanding access to quality cost-effective health care and improving whole person health. We want to get at the real causes that affect the health and wellness of many communities.
Factors outside the scope of health care – such as lack of access to food, housing and transportation – play a big role in a person's ability to attain a healthy lifestyle. They may also add to medical costs that place a financial burden on households and businesses.
These "social determinants of health" are the reason we are developing and implementing strategies for health equity within the health care delivery system. We're continuing to build our network of community partners to help bridge these gaps, so we can provide peace of mind and create solutions to address essential needs.
Most excitingly, in the spring of 2019, we are opening our first ever Blue Door Neighborhood CenterSM in Chicago's historic Pullman community. It will be our first ever brick-and-mortar presence where we will engage members and potential members face to face. The center will provide services and resources to help improve health and well-being of residents.
BCBSIL also leads with our values in every part of our business. As an example, we celebrate and foster diversity and inclusion. Our diverse workforce makes us stronger. Working together helps us understand and meet the needs of our members and communities.
We'll share stories through the year on this site about our efforts to live our purpose and stand with our members.
