Operating Responsibly

Our values guide how we operate as a corporate citizen and inspire continuous efforts to reduce to make our communities healthier and more sustainable.

Our Values at Work

Our core values — integrity, respect, commitment, excellence and caring — are embedded in every interaction with our members, customers and suppliers. And as a health insurer, we recognize that taking care of people requires taking care of the planet.

Taking Care of Our Planet

Optimizing Resources: Focusing on efficiency first, we reduce consumption to ease the strain on the grid and energy generation. Electric power we consume is 100% matched with the retirement of Green-e Certified Renewable Energy Certificates.

Recycling and Waste Reduction: We limit paper consumption, recycle paper and electronics and compost organics from our employee cafes. In 2025 we saved the equivalent of nearly 768,000 plastic bottles with bottle-free water dispensers in our buildings.

Transparency and Engagement: We participate in CDP to measure our environmental impact and support sustainable supply chain practices. In 2025, we earned a B rating from CDP recognizing we’re actively managing environmental impacts with policies, targets and actions. We encourage engagement and collaboration with initiatives led and supported by employee volunteers.

Supporting Biodiversity: Our urban beekeeping program supports of native bee populations with native bee homes and honeybee hives at our Pilsen and downtown offices in Chicago and pollinator gardens at our Mattoon and Danville locations. In 2025 we received our first biomonitoring reports, providing insights on nature-related impacts and opportunities around our offices.

Sustainable Investments: We subscribed to three new community solar projects in northwest and central Illinois in 2025 that will generate 16.5-megawatts of electricity to support Illinois communities.

Building Design: We’re subscribed to WELL at scale, applying the International WELL Building Institute’s health and well-being strategies across our entire building portfolio. Our headquarters building has earned the WELL Health-Safety rating since 2022 and is LEED-certified.

Our Commitment to Ethics and Integrity

External recognition assures our customers, business partners and communities that we are committed to ethics and integrity. That’s why we were proud to be named one of the 2025 World’s Most Ethical Companies® by Ethisphere® for the 10th straight year.

This designation recognizes a broad range of initiatives focused on culture, compliance practices, governance, environmental and social impacts, and third-party management. In addition to this global recognition, our Non-Retaliation Pro-Active Outreach Process was named a “best practice” by Health Ethics Trust.

These honors recognize our ability to sustain a robust compliance program even during times of change.

We maintain a strong ethical culture by leaning on our core values of integrity, respect, commitment, excellence and caring, which form the foundation of our codes of conduct.
