Special Enrollment – Getting Married

Congratulations! Getting married is an exciting time with many things to consider. We're glad you're thinking about your health plan options. If you and your fiancé need health care coverage after marriage, you're in luck.

Getting married is a qualifying event. This means that as long as you’ve had at least one day of health care coverage during the 60 days before your wedding, you can enroll in or change your health plan during a special enrollment period. Keep in mind this special enrollment period only lasts 60 days from your wedding day. After that, you'll have to wait until open enrollment.

If you've recently gotten married, you can enroll through Special Enrollment for 60 days from your wedding day

I don’t have health care coverage. How do I enroll?

If you don't have a health plan, you're in the right place. BCBSIL has many plans to choose from to fit your new family and budget. Let's get started.

I have a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) health plan. How do I add my new spouse to my plan?

What if I don’t qualify for special enrollment?

Depending on your income, you may qualify for Medicaid or CHIP. There is no special enrollment period for those government offered coverage options – you can apply at any time.

Members of American Indian and Alaska Native tribes can enroll any month, not just during open enrollment. You can even apply for cost assistance.
