What BCBSIL is Doing to Address Health Equity and SDoH

BCBSIL is committed to helping improve health equity for our members and the communities that we serve. The prevalence of health disparities has both a moral and economic imperative for action. Consequently, we are seeking to address opportunities to help improve health equity within the health care delivery system and outside of health care, upstream from disease and medical treatment.

To better understand the unique, social needs of BCBSIL members, we use the ICD-10 Z codes you submit on your claims. This helps us connect our members with available resources.

Blue Door Neighborhood CenterSM BCBSIL is committed to helping improve health equity for our members and the communities that we serve. One way we are doing this is by opening Blue Door Neighborhood Centers (BDNCs) in Chicago communities where some of our more vulnerable members live, work and play.

Blue ImpactSM Grants to Illinois Health and Wellness Organizations BCBSIL awarded $3.8 million to 76 nonprofit organizations committed to improving the health and wellness of Illinois residents. The grants are part of the Blue Impact grant program, which began in July 2023.

Care Van® Program For nearly 30 years, our fleet of Care Vans have brought public health services such as no cost immunizations, dental sealants and health literacy to schools, churches, parks, shopping centers, public housing, community events and other locations.

Corporate Social Responsibility Report As the only health insurer to offer a health plan in every Illinois ZIP code, we understand leadership is a privilege, and we are grateful for the opportunity to serve and support our members and communities. We’re focused on removing barriers to health equity, improving the health and wellness of our communities, and expanding access to affordable, quality care.

Housing Support BCBSIL is working to improve health outcomes for the community and its Medicaid members by identifying areas where improved housing access can have the greatest impact. Member eligibility for housing will be determined through BCBSIL assessments of care management and the care coordination process.

Transportation services to help our Medicaid members BCBSIL is working with ModivCare to provide non-emergency medical transportation services at no cost for our Blue Cross Community Health PlansSM and Blue Cross Community MMAI (Medicare-Medicaid Plan)SM members.
