Blue Distinction® Centers for Gene Therapy, Cellular Immunotherapy and Transplants have demonstrated expertise in delivering high-quality, cost-efficient care nationwide. These centers meet stringent clinical criteria and demonstrate better overall patient outcomes.
Boeing employees and covered dependents under specific Traditional Medical Plans and Advantage+ Plans are covered at 100%, subject to the plan deductible, when they receive care from a Blue Distinction Center for Transplants. Services received outside of the global claims administration are subject to standard benefits.

Blue Distinction® Centers:
- Blue Distinction Centers for Cellular Immunotherapy – Treatments for immune system diseases, chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapies
- Blue Distinction Centers for Gene Therapy – Gene therapies for inherited disorders, including ocular disorders
- Blue Distinction Centers for Transplants – These centers offer a range of transplant services, including: bone marrow and stem cell, heart, liver, lung and kidney.
Travel Benefit for Gene Therapy, Cellular Immunotherapy and Transplants
The travel benefit includes lodging and travel arrangements:
- Airfare Coach/Economy class ticket (patient and one caregiver)
- Ground Transportation
- Rental Car: At the rate of $65/day for a maximum total of no more than 14 consecutive days (1 day prior to departure allowed for rental car pickup and return) or
- Use of Personal Car: Members have the option of utilizing their personal vehicle and will be reimbursed at the IRS standard mileage rate for medical purposes (in effect at time of surgery).
- Meals - $65 per person per day (patient and one caregiver)
- Lodging - If the treatment center offers lodging, members are to use those lodging arrangements. If members do not, then they will be given $75 per person per night for lodging reimbursement (patient and one caregiver)

Designation as Blue Distinction Centers means these facilities’ overall experience and aggregate data met objective criteria established in collaboration with expert clinicians' and leading professional organizations’ recommendations. Individual outcomes may vary. To find out which services are covered under your policy at any facilities, please call BCBSIL; and call your provider before making an appointment, to verify the most current information on their Network participation status. Neither Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association nor any of its licensees are responsible for any damages, losses, or non-covered charges that may result from receiving care from a provider designated as a Blue Distinction Center.
The travel benefit includes lodging, meals and travel arrangements for members that must travel more than 75 miles (one-way) from their home. These benefits are subject to the provider’s treatment plans that meet medical necessity. Members may be responsible to pay taxes on any reimbursed services that exceed standard IRS Code §213(d) / Publication 502; for example, any expenses for lodging can be taxed for charges more than $50 for each night for each person.
