Care Van® Program
For nearly 25 years, our fleet of three Care Vans has canvased the state, partnering with municipal and county health departments who offer services like free immunizations, dental sealants and lead screenings. Since 1990, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) has teamed up with the Chicago Department of Public Health to offer free immunizations on-board one van. Nearly 10,000 immunizations were given in 2013, and the Care Vans were also used at a number of targeted events in partnership with the following:
- Chicago Department of Public Health
- Edgar County Department of Public Health
- Glen Oak Medical Plaza, Peoria
- Madison County Health Department
- Du Page County Health Department
- Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago
- Chicago Aldermanic Offices
- Chicago Police Districts
During the summer months in Chicago, the Care Van traveled to weekend health fairs every week. These fairs helped families prepare for back-to-school immunization requirements. Hosted by churches, block associations, shopping centers and aldermanic offices, these sites would not have been able to offer free immunizations without the Care Van partnership.
