Choosing a Hospital

We understand that finding care from carefully screened providers is important. That's why the Blue Distinction® program was created. This program identifies hospitals and medical facilities that have a proven track record for delivering better results.

There are two types of Blue Distinction recognitions:

  • Blue Distinction Centers: Hospitals that have proven their ability to meet high standards of specialty care.
  • Blue Distinction Centers+: Hospitals that are recognized for meeting high standards of care and for delivering cost-effective care.

Note: Designation as Blue Distinction Centers means these facilities' overall experience and aggregate data met objective criteria established in collaboration with expert clinicians' and leading professional organizations' recommendations. Individual outcomes may vary. To find out which services are covered under your policy at any facilities, please call the customer service phone number on the back of your Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois member ID card.

Transition of Care

If you enroll in a new health plan, your provider network may change. If you are currently receiving treatment from a doctor who is not part of your new network, you may apply to continue treatment with that doctor temporarily. Review the following transitional care criteria for eligibility.

Examples of medical conditions that may meet the guidelines:

  • Pregnancy in the third trimester
  • Patients who are hospitalized prior to January 1st of the current year
  • Terminal illness where life expectancy is less than six months
  • Long-term treatment of cancer, heart disease, transplants

Examples of medical conditions that do not meet the guidelines:

  • Routine care (immunizations, physicals)
  • Chronic conditions that are stabilized (asthma, diabetes, heart disease)
  • Minor illness or injury (flu, sore throat, sprains)
  • Elective surgery

Contact Customer Service at 1-877-217-7986 if you (or a covered dependent) believe you are eligible for transitional care.
