The BlueCard® Program

Traveling across the country or around the world? Our unique BlueCard Program helps Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) members access doctors and hospitals across the nation and around the world.*

BlueCard is a national program that enables members to obtain health care services when traveling or living outside their Blue Plan service area. When BCBSIL members travel or live away from home for an extended period of time, they'll have the same benefits as their BCBSIL Plan. More than 90% of all hospitals and 80% of doctors in the United States contract with Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans. Outside the United States, members have access to doctors and hospitals in more than 200 countries and territories around the world through the BlueCard Worldwide® Program.

BlueCard coverage will vary for each BCBS Plan and will vary depending on whether you choose a contracting or non-contracting provider. Be sure to call Customer Service at the number on the back of your member ID card before traveling.

If you are already a BCBSIL member, log in to Blue Access for MembersSM to access more detailed information.

The Away from Home Care® Program

Access for Extended Stays (Temporarily Residing Away From Home)

BCBSIL HMO members may become guests of an affiliated BCBSIL HMO when they are away from home for at least 90 consecutive days through the Away From Home Care program. This is ideal for members who have dependent children living in other states (attending school, for example). This guest membership program enables ongoing access to contracting hospitals and doctors.

If you are already a BCBSIL member, log in to Blue Access for MembersSM to access more detailed information. Call the Customer Service number on the back of your member ID card for specific locations where the program is available.

* The Away From Home Care Program is not available to members on the Blue Precision Network. Also, the BlueCard Program is not available for Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D plan members.

This is only a brief description of some of the plan benefits. Not all benefits are offered by all Plans mentioned above. For more complete details, including benefits, limitations and exclusions, please refer to your certificate of coverage.
