Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois Locating New Customer Service Center in Pilsen

300-person office is company’s fifth facility in Chicago

CHICAGO — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) is preparing to occupy a new 103,000-square-foot facility at 920 W. Cullerton in Pilsen, with plans to house as many as 300 customer service and information technology personnel there. The new location is part of the company’s strategy to expand into Chicago neighborhoods where it can benefit from the skilled workforce in those communities.

BCBSIL initially is hiring up to 70 customer service positions, with an emphasis on bilingual applicants, as it prepares to occupy the Mural Park development in Pilsen this month. The company has a 10-year lease for the 100-year-old former lumber distribution facility, which has been converted into a modern office building with its original exposed brick and timber interior décor. It includes break and training rooms and 210 parking spaces, including 185 in an adjacent garage.

“Our new location and the jobs it will bring to Pilsen show how we’re creating opportunities and investing in local neighborhoods,” said BCBSIL President Stephen Harris. “In the past four years, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois has opened locations in Pullman, Morgan Park and South Lawndale. We’re excited to open a new office in Pilsen, bolstering our multilingual capabilities and bringing additional economic opportunity to this vibrant community.”

BCBSIL will host a hiring day on Aug. 10 at the new Pilsen location, where job seekers who registered online can apply for open roles. Customer Advocate positions require six months of experience in customer service, and the starting wage is $18 an hour, plus a 401(k) plan and health insurance. Compensation for the approximately 30 Information Technology roles will depend on work experience, and also includes a 401(k) plan and health insurance. Select applicants may receive job offers at the event.

“This latest investment in Pilsen is a tremendous vote of confidence in our community,” said Alex Esparza, president of the Pilsen-based business development corporation ESDC Chicago. “This is a growing community with a skilled and diverse workforce, attractive office locations and strong infrastructure, and we couldn’t be happier to welcome Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois to the neighborhood.”

The new facility will meet rising demand for Spanish-language member inquiries and becomes BCBSIL’s 18th facility in Illinois, joining offices in Rockford, Springfield, Waukegan, Lombard, Downers Grove, Naperville, Quincy, Jacksonville, Danville, Mattoon, Belleville and Marion.
