Women’s Health Event Connects Charleston Community to Screenings, Resources and Expert Care

In honor of Women’s Health Month, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, in partnership with SIHF Healthcare, is reinforcing the importance of preventive care and early detection following a recent community wellness initiative focused on women’s health.

The free event brought together local healthcare professionals and community members for a day focused on education, screenings and open conversations, highlighting a critical need for accessible, preventive health services.

Proactive care, including routine screenings and early conversations with health care providers, plays a vital role in identifying potential health concerns before they become more serious. However, many women face barriers such as time, cost or uncertainty about where to start.

“Preventive care, like the screenings provided at our event, are tools we have to protect long-term health,” says Alvia Siddiqi, MD, BCBSIL chief medical officer. “When women have access to screenings and engage in early detection, it can change outcomes and even save lives.”

Through screenings, a live provider panel, fitness demonstrations and opportunities for one-on-one engagement, the event helped connect women in the community to resources and information that support proactive health decisions.

Leaders from SIHF Healthcare emphasized that bringing care into the community is vital to improving health outcomes.

“Access is everything when it comes to preventive care,” says Larry McCulley, chief executive officer, SIHF Healthcare. “When we remove barriers and create opportunities for women to get screened and speak with providers, we are helping build healthier communities from the ground up.”

The initiative serves as a reminder that prioritizing health does not have to be complicated. Small steps, like getting an annual screening, asking questions, or learning more about personal health risks, can make a significant difference over time.

BCBSIL and SIHF Healthcare remain committed to expanding access to preventive services and encouraging women to take an active role in their health, not just during May, but year-round.
