From Our President

The lingering social and economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic made 2021 another very challenging year for our members, our friends, neighbors, our providers -- and our colleagues. We overcame many of those challenges and can take great pride on what we accomplished together.

We remain committed to improving the health of our members and the communities we serve.

As a leading health care company in Illinois, we know that health outcomes depend on more than access to care. These outcomes also depend upon meeting essential needs and the social determinants of health- including stable housing, education, food security, safety, employment, transportation, and access to culturally competent healthcare providers. These vary by community, which is why we work to improve personal health and health equity at a hyperlocal level.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois Plan President Stephen Harris

In 2021 we stayed true to our purpose, addressing food insecurity through our many foods security events, providing health and wellness resources at care fairs across the state while promoting education and insights that help drive economic stability. For example, we launched a student mentorship and job shadowing program, provided grants to non-profit partners working to improve infant and maternal health, and hosted hundreds of no-cost virtual and in-person activities focused on physical, mental, and social health at our Blue Door Neighborhood CentersSM. We also facilitated 38,000 immunizations through our Care Van program.

As part of our long-standing commitment to the communities in which we serve, we continued to provide grants to organizations focused on improving access to health care, fighting hunger, improving behavioral health and access to housing, and promoting testing and vaccinations. We focus on long-term grantmaking to community organizations that has a lasting impact.

Good corporate citizenship means leading by example and living true to our purpose. We’re proud to be the only insurer to offer a health plan in every Illinois zip code — expanding access to affordable, high-quality care throughout our great state.

We’ve accomplished a lot, but we’re not done. Throughout this year, we’ll share stories of how we’re working to enable everyone to live a healthy life. Thank you for taking the time to read and watch our stories.
