From Our President

While we saw great improvement in the pandemic this year, we were confronted by new subvariants, rising inflation, and high labor demand. In fact, 2022 turned out to be another challenging year for our members, providers and colleagues. While we work to overcome these challenges, I’m encouraged by what we accomplished this year, and excited about the year ahead.

As the No. 1 health insurer in the state, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois knows health care relies on more than medical professionals. Social determinants of health also play a vital role. We are unique in the way we address housing stability, food security, public safety and employment programs to directly meet the challenges of health equity.

Years like this show why we’re committed to improve health in the communities we serve — this is our purpose and is at the heart of what we do. We’ve helped more than 100,000 people facing food insecurity and provided health education to people across the state.

BCBSIL President Stephen Harris

We supported local community organizations, schools and places of worship at 300 events to help people where they live, providing vaccinations and colorectal health promotion for thousands of Illinoisans. We’re focused on removing barriers to health equity, improving the health and wellness of our communities, and expanding access to affordable, quality care.

It’s a fact that ZIP codes can be a better indicator of health outcomes than genetics or family history. We’re committed to fixing that by standing with our members and the communities we serve. We’ll keep providing grants to organizations that work to end poverty, hunger and homelessness, improve behavioral health, and support elder care and workforce development.

As the only health insurer to offer a health plan in every Illinois ZIP code, we understand leadership is a privilege, and we are grateful for the opportunity to serve and support our members and communities.

While we’ve accomplished a lot, there’s always more we can do. You’ll hear more about our work to promote healthy living and expand access to high-quality care across the state of Illinois — and we’ll show you the results of that work. Thanks for taking the time to read and watch our stories, and we hope you’ll stay involved and support that work.

Sincerely,

Stephen Harris
President, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois
