Making an Impact 2018 Highlights

Investing in Community Partners to Improve Health

We invested more than $1.8 million in our nonprofit partners in 2018 to improve access to resources for healthier lives and communities. This includes joining efforts to end food insecurity, helping four food banks distribute more than 290,000 pounds of food across Illinois. We also support Windy City Harvest, which provides job training and healthy food options in Chicago neighborhoods.

Fostering Solutions to Improve Health Equity

Many things besides medical care — like housing, transportation and food access — play a role in health and well-being. In 2018, we worked with health tech incubator MATTER to find and foster innovative ideas to improve health equity. The Health Equity Innovation Challenge was part of Affordability Cures, our commitment to addressing root causes of health care costs.

Making Connections in Our Communities

In 2018, more than 4,000 employees recorded 66,784 hours of service with organizations across Illinois. In June, we teamed up with Northwestern Medicine volunteers to refresh the paint and décor in five public schools for the Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon, the city’s biggest day of service.

Bridging Gaps to Support Whole-Person Health

Not everyone has enough access to vital health services and resources, and we’re committed to helping bridge these gaps. In 2018, our Care Van® mobile health program helped deliver vaccinations, health screenings and other services to 21,715 people. This spring, we’ll open our first Blue Door Neighborhood Center to provide in-person services that help Chicagoans improve their health.

Caring for Our Environment

The environment has a big impact on health and well-being. We’re committed to sustainable business practices like recycling, waste reduction, renewable energy use and responsible food sourcing. This commitment extends to our community efforts, too. In 2018, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois sponsored Divvy bike-share program offset the equivalent of 2,215 cars and nearly 1.2 million gallons of gas.
