Radiology Quality Initiative (RQI)/American Imaging Management Inc. (AIM)

BCBSIL has partnered with American Imaging Management Inc. (AIM) to implement a statewide utilization management and quality improvement program for the management of outpatient diagnostic imaging services. All BCBSIL PPO and BlueChoice Select members are included in the Radiology Quality Initiative (RQI) program for elective, outpatient, high-tech imaging services.

What does this mean for providers?
Effective for dates of service on or after April 15, 2006, compliance with the RQI Program will be required for the outpatient diagnostic non-emergency imaging services listed below, when performed in a physician's office, the outpatient department of a hospital or a freestanding imaging center.

  • CT and CTA scans
  • MRI and MRA scans
  • Nuclear Cardiology studies
  • PET scans

Ordering physicians: You must contact AIM to obtain an RQI number prior to scheduling an imaging exam for BCBSIL PPO, BlueChoice and BlueChoice Select members

Servicing providers (hospitals and freestanding imaging centers): You should confirm that an RQI number was issued before performing services. Please note that issuance of an RQI number is not guarantee of payment. When submitted, the claim will be processed in accordance with the terms of a subscriber's health benefit plan. Imaging service providers cannot request an RQI number.

Contact AIM
Online: Ordering physicians can obtain, and imaging service providers can confirm, a patient's RQI number on AIM's Web site at www.americanimaging.net.

Telephone: Beginning Monday, April 3, 2006 AIM will open a Call Center to accept RQI inquiries for dates of service beginning April 15th. You can also verify that an RQI number has been issued by calling AIM's RQI Department toll-free at 1-866-455-8415 Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (CST).

AIM, Inc.is the nation's leading provider of diagnostic imaging management services and has received UM Certification from NCQA (National Committee for Quality Assurance), and is fully accredited by URAC, the American Accreditation Health Care Commission.
