The Care Comparison tool can be used to research and compare individual hospital outcome data for more than 100 specific diagnoses and procedures and hospital performance factors such as mortality, length-of-stay, complications, and how frequently a hospital performs specific procedures. The tool also can be used to review cost of care data for specific procedures performed at designated facilities, along with the volume of services performed for all payers over a specific date range.
Information presented in the Care Comparison tool is based on data reported to state and federal government agencies, such as the Leapfrog Group’s hospital survey results on patient safety measures (the Leapfrog Group is a consortium of more than 130 large companies that are encouraging more stringent patient safety). Cost of care data pulled from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) claims system is used for designated facilities, including related professional services. Information on volume of services performed by these facilities for all payers is obtained directly from participating providers.
When members are deciding on the health care services they need, and the facilities to perform these services, we anticipate that they will use the Care Comparison tool as a guide before making a choice. We recommend that our members discuss their research results with their physician before making any treatment decisions, keeping in mind that certain health plans require notification for hospitalization or prior authorization/approval for services.
Members can obtain access to the Care Comparison tool via our secure Blue Access® for Members site. Providers may view the Care Comparison tool by clicking on the link below.
