BCBSIL Launches New On-exchange Enrollment Process

Sept. 1, 2021

What’s new. Consumers can now enroll, end-to-end, in our Marketplace plans via an online process CMS calls Enhanced Direct Enrollment (EDE).

What’s Enhanced Direct Enrollment? CMS partners with entities like ours and allows consumers to apply for and enroll in a Marketplace plan directly through our site – without being redirected to healthcare.gov to complete eligibility and tax credit information. (Learn more about how CMS allows EDE for carriers Leaving site icon.)

Same steps for clients: If you’ve helped your clients enroll in a Marketplace plan on healthcare.gov Leaving site icon, using EDE via the Retail Shopping Cart will be familiar to you. It asks similar questions and follows the same process as healthcare.gov enrollment.

Phase 1 down, 2 to go: There are three EDE implementation phases. We’ve implemented Phase 1, which supports some, but not all enrollment scenarios and situations. For details on our launch of Phase 1 of EDE, see our producer training PDF.
