FDA updates advice on statin drugs

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued new safety information about statin drugs, often prescribed to lower cholesterol. The FDA no longer recommends routine monitoring of liver enzymes, for example. However, the agency warns that statin users may run a small, increased risk of type 2 diabetes and other health problems.

Avoiding food-borne illness

Food illness

Outdoor picnics and barbecues are fun, but summer's rising temperatures can mean increased health risks due to contaminated or undercooked food. Fortunately, you can cut those risks by taking some simple steps.

Summer is also the time to take precautions against West Nile virus and tick-borne diseases. The Centers for Disease Control says taking measures to avoid mosquito and tick bites can help decrease risk of exposure to these illnesses.

Museum honors Native Americans

The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian in Evanston, Ill., is one of a handful of museums in the nation to focus exclusively on the contributions of American Indians and First Nation peoples in the United States and Canada. The museum opened 35 years ago and continues to expand its outreach.
