Stop Sports Injuries This Summer

There are many benefits to playing sports and exercising. But, there is something we don’t always think of as we get on our bikes or run out on the soccer field: getting hurt.

Sports injuries are very common among all age groups. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 7 million sports or recreation-related injuries are sustained each year. Thankfully there are steps you can take to keep you and your kids safe this summer.

What are some ways to prevent injuries?

Use the right equipment — Make sure you and your child use the right protective gear for their sport or activity such as wrist guards, knee pads and helmets. The gear should fit and be in good condition.

See your doctor for a health evaluation —Many sports require you to get checked out by your doctor before you can play, and for good reason. A health check can pinpoint if you or your child have any health issues that may lead to injury.

Warm up — Jog in place or do some jumping jacks or lunges to get your heart rate up and to loosen up your muscles and joints. All of this can help you perform at your best and likely prevent sprains and strains.

Drink water — One of the easiest things you can do to prevent injuries is to stay hydrated before, during and after your sport or activity. Water helps your muscles work properly, preventing cramping. A good rule of thumb is to drink about 4-6 ounces every 15-20 minutes while playing.

Stretch — Before you start your activity, make sure you stretch out your muscles. Stretching lowers your chances of getting hurt by helping your muscles work properly and your joints move more easily.
