Preventing Allergy Symptoms

You can manage and even prevent hay fever. There is no cure for allergies, but there are ways you can try to help your symptoms. Help keep your family healthy and safe with these steps:

  • Keep an eye and nose alert for mold. Discolorations and musty smells can be signs of mold. If you find mold, clean it with one cup of bleach to five gallons of water.
  • Take aim against dust mites which like to camp in carpeting, pillows and furniture. Wash bedding and clothes in hot water, put mattresses and pillows into mite-proof cases and have carpeting cleaned.
  • If you wake up congested, try hanging a bundle of eucalyptus leaves from your shower curtain rod. The heat and steam help bring out the herb’s essential oils, which can ease congestion.
  • Move more. People who work out have better lung capacity and less upper airway congestion which improves breathing while you sleep.

Easing Your Symptoms With Medication

There are medications — both over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription — to help ease bothersome symptoms such as congestion and runny nose. These allergy drugs include antihistamines , decongestants  and saline nasal sprays.

Many people take an antihistamine to help control allergies. Antihistamines help block allergic reactions and should be taken before the symptoms start for the best results. Talk to your doctor or other health care specialist about which antihistamine may be right for you.
