Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois' Tammy Smith Named "Woman of Excellence" by Chicago Defender

Apr. 14, 2014

Chicago, IL — The Chicago Defender strives to support African-American women who inspire others through their exceptional achievements and participation in community service. This year, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois' (BCBSIL) Tamatha Smith, Retail Markets Think Blue team Manager, occupies one of the 50 coveted spots in the publications 8th Annual Women of Excellence Awards.

"Tammy is exceptional, not only because of what she does for Retail Markets, but also for her impact to the community," said Betsy Reyes Director of Consumer Marketing and Community Development at BCBSIL. "HCSC is fortunate to have such an incredible colleague and is glad to see how the community recognizes her as well."

Aside from managing the Think Blue team, Smith is also a member of the National Association of Healthcare Underwriters and sits on Health Care Service Corporations' Diversity and Inclusion Council. Smith also hosts and has participated in over 1,200 learning lectures, health fairs and informational help desks. She also participates as a member of several local organizations that provide much needed services and programs in the Chicagoland area including The Southeast Providers Council, South East Atlas Center Auxiliary Committee, The Renaissance Collaborative Gala committee and the Southeast Senior Service Coalition.

Before joining BCBSIL in 2006, Tamatha worked in the healthcare industry for over 15 years and proudly served in the U.S Army from 1985 to 1995 as a Field Medical Specialist and Non-Commissioned officer, with the 108th Medical Battalion of Illinois. Smith holds a B.A. in Liberal Arts and Sciences from The University of Illinois at Chicago and recently obtained her M.B.A., with high honors, at The Lake Forest Graduate School of Management with a concentration in Organizational Behavior.

Throughout its 107-year legacy, the Chicago Defender has acknowledged and celebrated the resilience, determination, expertise, and achievement of more than 400 women such as Carol Mosley-Braun former Senator and Ambassador, Patricia Andrews-Kennan, Corporate Communications Executive, Margaret Garner, the first African American woman-contractor to build a Wal-Mart store, and Michelle Obama for her contributions in health care and medicine during her tenure at the University of Chicago Hospital.

This year's Women of Excellence will be featured in a special edition of the Chicago Defender on April 17th and each will be recognized for their outstanding achievement during a special awards luncheon/reception while one individual will be named Woman of the Year.
