Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois Launches Scholarship to Help Future Health Science Leaders

Feb. 14, 2014

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) President Karen Atwood returned to her alma mater, DePaul University, to present an $80,000 check that will benefit two students pursuing degrees in Health Sciences.

DePaul sophomores Gloria Zavala and Kal Vaughn Nastek were awarded the first-ever BCBSIL Health Sciences Scholarships. Each will receive tuition credits totalling $40,000.

The goal of the scholarship is to increase diversity and the boost the number of people choosing careers in health care. To qualify for the scholarship, BCBSIL was looking for students from under-resourced communities with good grade point averages who wanted to go into the field of Health Sciences.

At the check-presentation ceremony, Karen said, "The significance of the BCBSIL Health Sciences Scholarship is multifaceted: It recognizes the pivotal role that healthcare and health sciences will play in the economy not only now, but years to come. This scholarship provides opportunities to students, who may someday be leaders and professionals in this field. It aligns with BCBSIL's commitment to all aspects of diversity and inclusion as well as our commitment to education and it gives credence to our purpose, which is to stand by the people (students included) in the communities we serve."
