Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois Provides Donation to Advance Construction of Springfield High School Athletic Practice Facility

Feb. 10, 2014

Chicago, IL — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois announces today that it is donating $7,000 to the capital funding campaign to develop and construct a synthetic playing surface at Springfield High School's New Street athletic practice facility. Other facility upgrades are planned in addition to the new, state-of-the-art playing surface, including new football goal posts and soccer goals.

The total cost of the new playing surface is $640,000, and the school's booster club is raising funds through private donations. Mike Mannion, vice president of government relations for Blue Cross, and a Springfield resident said, "This contribution is a gesture that's in keeping with Blue Cross's commitment to fostering healthy, active lifestyles. We hope this facility will be a benefit not only to the Springfield high school students, but to student-athletes from around Central Illinois."

Mike Grossen, principal of Springfield High School added, "On behalf of Springfield High School and the SHS Boosters, we thank Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois for this generous donation. This donation will benefit thousands of students and community members now and in the future."

In addition to the facility currently hosting eight physical education classes daily and providing a football practice field, it also serves as a location for marching band practice, and track practice and meets for Grant Middle School. New 500-seat capacity bleachers are included in the renovation plans.
