Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois Employees Log 338 Volunteer Hours During National Volunteer Week

May. 06, 2013

Chicago, IL — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) celebrated National Volunteer Week (April 21–27) by recognizing the achievements of our volunteers and offering a host of new opportunities to serve others. To kick off the week, our headquarters at 300 E. Randolph Street in Chicago was illuminated with #NVW spelled out in the windows overlooking Millennium Park. "Bluepalooza", was another highlight of the week. Employees were invited to a volunteer fair; where ten community organizations shared ways our employees could donate their time and talents throughout the year. Extra volunteer opportunities were available to employees this week, culminating in employees logging 388 hours helping others.

Some highlights:

  • Stuffing 1,000 disaster relief kits and 1,000 Veteran's kits for the American Red Cross.
  • Sorting and packing nearly 7,000 pounds of food at the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
  • Donating enough blood to potentially save more than 120 lives for the American Red Cross.
  • Painting and spring cleaning at Carpenter's Place in Rockford.
  • Volunteering at Healthy Kids Day fairs at YMCA's in Danville, Rockford, Naperville and Downers Grove.

The week featured a video tribute commemorating the 10th "birthday" of our mascot, Blue Bear. Volunteers who help bring Blue Bear to life were also given a special commemorative present. All these activities reinforce the commitment of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois to serve the communities in which our employees live, work and play. In 2012, BCBSIL employees spent nearly 11,500 hours volunteering with 159 non-profit agencies. You can read more about those activities in our Social Responsibility Report.
