Special Beginnings®

We understand how important it is to take care of yourself and your growing baby. That's why we are pleased to offer Special Beginnings, a prenatal program designed to provide expectant mothers with educational information and support throughout pregnancy.

If you enroll within the first 17 weeks of your pregnancy and complete and initial health assessment, you'll receive:

  • The Good Housekeeping Illustrated Book or Pregnancy and Baby Care
  • a $50 gift card valid at any Toys "R" Us or Babies "R" Us (if you complete the final questionnaire within seven weeks after the baby is born)

This program will also help guide you through your pregnancy with:

  • access to a 24 hour, toll-free BabyLine® staffed by maternity nurses
  • educational materials specific to your needs
  • an e-mail newsletter
  • an online health information library

How to Enroll

  • Pre-notify your pregnancy by calling the number on the back of your ID card.
  • You have the option of completing the initial assessment on the phone, online or by written materials sent to you in the mail.
  • You will receive a welcome packet with important pregnancy-related educational materials along with a user ID and password
  • Visit the Special Beginnings login page and enter the ID and password exactly as they appear on your welcome letter. For added security, the first time that you log onto the site, you'll be prompted to change your password
  • Halfway through your pregnancy, you'll receive a reminder to complete a follow-up assessment.

With your written permission, information from your health assessments will be shared with your doctor. If there are any significant factors that could affect your pregnancy, a maternity nurse will offer to coordinate your care.

The Special Beginnings program is administered by Alere through a contractual arrangement between Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois ("BCBSIL") and Matria Women's and Children's Health, LLC d/b/a as Alere. The relationship between BCBSIL and Alere is that of independent contractors.
